October 7 - 6:00pm
Aquinas College Gatehouse
Off Robinson Rd., Just East of Wilcox Park

ACTIVATE–the Grand Rapids affiliate of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)–is holding a new member meeting on October 7. Come learn about what we have done over the past year and a half, what we have planned for the future, and share your ideas.

For the past year we have been demanding an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq. We have confronted legislators, held protests, challenged military recruiters, and organized film showings. We need to keep the pressure up and to do that, we need your help.

As of September 24, 2007, the Iraq War has cost the United States over $454 billion dollars.

Of that $454 billion, the war has cost taxpayers in Michigan over $12 billion, with an estimated $237 million coming from taxpayers in Grand Rapids.

That money could have–and should have–been used to fund social programs within our community. The money could have:

* Built 2,141 additional housing units
* Hired 4,122 public school teachers for one year
* Paid for 31,507 children to attend Head Start for one year
* Insured 142,442 children for one year
* Provided four-year scholarships for 11,531 students at public universities

Additionally, the war has had significant human costs:

* At least 144 soldiers from Michigan have been killed in the war.
* At least 6 soldiers from Grand Rapids.
* At least 655,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed as a result of the invasion and occupation.

Since the war began, Grand Rapids area congressional Representative Vern Ehlers has voted for every funding package and has consistently opposed any legislation aimed at ending the occupation of Iraq. Similarly, Michigan’s two Senators–Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow–while initially opposing the war, have voted for every funding package and have expressed support for a continued US presence in Iraq.

ACTIVATE/SDS is encouraging as many people as possible to come to the Tuesday,September 25 Grand Rapids City Commission meeting to demand that they pass an antiwar resolution as soon as possible. In August, Mayor Heartwell agreed to do so and two weeks later changed his mind. Instead, he is now calling for a public forum.

We demand that the City Commission pass an antiwar resolution now because:

* As of September 17, the war in Iraq has cost Grand Rapids taxpayers over $236 million dollars

* More than half of the American public wants the US to End the Occupation and the majority of Iraqis want the US military OUT NOW!

If the City Commission wants to host a forum then we encourage people to suggest that the forum be for the purpose of having our area legislators–Ehlers, Levin and Stabenow–listen to the concerns of people in Grand Rapids.

The City Commission meeting begins at 7pm on September 25. The meeting takes place on the 9th floor of City Hall, which is located at 300 Monroe NW in downtown Grand Rapids.

If you cannot make this meeting please send a prewritten e-mail to the Commissioners at
